My main expertise is in applied cryptography and information security, especially in the area of symmetric key cryptography. I am also interested in data-mining, computer-intelligence and algorithms in general. Expertise: Applied cryptography, cryptanalysis, authenticated encryption, lightweight cryptography for IoT, security of cryptocurrencies, anonymity and privacy, network security.

Underlying technologies: symmetric cryptography, ciphers, cryptographic hash functions, tools for cryptanalysis, privacy enchancing technologies, onion routing, Tor, Bitcoin and blockchain technology, memory-hard functions, complexity of algorithms, time-memory tradeoffs, side-channel analysis.

Brief Bio

Alex Biryukov is currently a full professor at the University of Luxembourg. Alex has been formerly a visiting professor and an FWO-fellow at K.U.Leuven (ESAT, COSIC group), Belgium, working with Prof. Bart Preneel. Alex was participating in the development of European standards for Signature, Integrity and Encryption Schemes (NESSIE project) and in the European Strategic Roadmap for CRYPTO (STORK project). He and his group has been taking part in the FP6-FP7 Network of Excellence ECRYPT I&II (consortiums of 30 European university and industry teams). Alex is actively involved in cryptographic research, often gives talks at the international conferences and workshops, consults in applied cryptography. He has served as a program committee member for more than 40 international conferences and workshops, including the top conferences in the field of cryptography such as EUROCRYPT, CRYPTO, ASIACRYPT (with acceptance rates below 1/5). Alex has been a program chair of FSE'2007 and SAC'2010. Alex co-organizes ESC seminar which is bi-annual gathering of top experts in symmetric cryptography paired with a similar seminar at Dagstuhl.

Alex was previously a post-doc at the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel), working with Prof. Adi Shamir.

Alex has completed in 1994 his M.Sc. on "Cryptanalysis and Improvement of the Data Encryption Standard" at the Technion,(Haifa, Israel) under the supervision of Prof. Eli Biham. He has completed his Ph.D in 1999 on "Methods of Cryptanalysis" at the Technion , (Haifa, Israel) under the supervision of Prof. Shimon Even and Prof. Eyal Kushilevitz. Alex is a member of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) since 1994.

"Symmetric Key Cryptography and Network Security" (MICS, Univ.Luxembourg) "Cryptography in the Real World" (MICS, Univ.Luxembourg) "Basics of Algorithmics, Cryptography and Security" (BINFO, Univ.Luxembourg)

Previous teaching: "Methods of Cryptanalysis" in Leuven (2002/2003) and Weizmann (2001); Advanced Symmetric Crypto at K.U.Leuven (2005).
